National Steel is the indie cosmic Americana solo recording project of Michael Hattem. Under the name “National Steel,” Hattem combines a wide range of roots and retro pop influences in both his songwriting and production to create a sound that is simultaneously rooted in the past and present, both classic and contemporary.
All of the National Steel records––Anhedonia from 2006, Anomie from 2007, Threnody from 2018, and Hiraeth from 2019––have been essentially solo home recording projects in which Hattem served as engineer, mixer, and producer as well as songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist.
